“GRAFFOLUTION – From Graffiti Writing to Abstract Painting unites 47 international artists and crews from the post-stylewriting era, who contributed exclusive stuff to the same task. All of them interpreted the motto ‘From Graffiti Writing to Abstract Painting’ in a practical and theoretical way, providing both, a piece of art (or a series of pieces) and an explanatory text (or interview).” – Graffolution
Since the 2000s, the transition from graffiti writing to abstract painting has developed mainly online, particularly in Eastern Europe. In 2015, Oliver Kuhnert initiated a book called GRAFFOLUTION, bringing together selected representatives of post-stylewriting to explore this transition under the motto From Graffiti Writing to Abstract Painting.
Each participant created a work or series interpreting the motto freely, accompanied by a text explaining their approach. As broad as the selection of artists is, as different are the interpretations and realizations of the Graffolution-motto. The roots are sometimes easy to spot – in other cases theses origins can be hardly recognized. The resulting works show very different relationships to classic writing – from clearly recognizable roots to almost completely abstract forms. An afterword by art historian Dr. Harald Hinz places this development within a broader historical context. GRAFFOLUTION offers a unique insight into the evolution, ideas and working methods behind abstract graffiti.
