Vom Abstrakten Expressionismus zur Befreiung im 21. Jahrhundert

Over the last years art historian Larissa Kikol extensively worked and researched on the field Abstract Art beyond its historic past and mainly focusing on contemporary artists and their background. With an open eye and mind she did not shy to also include graffiti connected representatives of abstract art in her studies within the last decade.

In her recently released scientific reader Neue Abstrakte Malerei (New Abstract Painting) she summed up and compiled the essence of her research from the post war period until the present on 288 pages. In nine main chapters Kikol leads the reader through an overview of the most important artists with in depth interviews and analyzing essays in the field.

For readers with a writing background especially the book’s second half might gets most interesting when she connects the works of writing related artists like Antwan Horfee, the DIAMONDS crew, NUG, NEU and OVER and the post vandalism movement with the established art world. The 80 well selected images also show scenes from the legendary ‘Art Inconsequence’ movie by director Robert Kaltenhäuser whose statements are part of the content as well. With her refreshing open minded view on the recent art history the complete book manages to entertain from start to the end.

Also featured are Frederic Anderson, Karla Black, Frank Bowling, Andreas Breunig, Jenny Brosinski, Cecily Brown, André Butzer, Willehad Eilers, Jadé Fadojutimi, Helen Frankenthaler, Katharina Grosse, Aneta Kajzer, Joan Mitchell, Michael Müller, Oscar Murillo, Albert Oehlen, David Ostrowski, Daisy Parris, Marco Pariani, Jackson Pollock, Christopher Wool, and others.
