An overview on the Manhattan gentrification in 99 doors

After the French writer and photographer Robin Soulier moved to New York City in 2005 he started taking photos of graffiti in the streets. After a major part of his 11.000 photo collection got lost he decided to focus on remaining photos of doors which he rediscovered on an old hard drive. While meanwhile he moved back to France the plan to revisit the city and 99 selected doors became reality in 2015.

“Usually slightly away from the streets, they can be a safe spot for writers who can leave their mark without being seen or caught! Rarely cleaned, they are like a vivid testimony of countless visual attacks, in the dark of the night or broad day light. Their shapes are like frames, small halls of fame to the passing eye.”

The 216-paged TEN YEARS LATER compiles the results of almost one hundred doors that he put side by side for a direct comparison. The outcome is not only a precious documentation of the mid 2000s tagging scene in New York, but also evidence of gentrification which goes along with a significant loss of the city’s charm. Renovated and obviously more strict buffed doors lead to a decline in brilliant handstyles which dominated a decade before.

The book is a rare example of comprehensive field research documentation put together in a graffiti publication. A prefixed index even allows to exactly find the location of each street entry. The book’s unusual format reminds of a door itself – a lovely detail. We offer both softcover and hardcover versions, with the latter limited to 299 copies only.
