Revue TAG 7 – FUZI

Mémoire périphérique: tags de la fin des années 80 et du début des années 90, Paris et banlieue

FUZI is a Paris originated graffiti writer who started out in the late 1980s and is member of the legendary U.V. and TPK crews. In the mid 90s he became known for the so called ‘ignorant style’, a stylistic approach directly referencing the early 70s origins of piecing in New York City.

As presented in Revue TAG 7 throughout his career FUZI did not only document the works by himself, his partners and crew mates but also took shots of remaining tags in Paris and its surrounding suburbs. In between 1993 and 2001 a collection of almost 200 photos grew in his archive each one containing several classic handstyles of that era.

“This revue TAG has never been more true to its name. In these pages, you will find nothing but tags, made by various writers between the late 1980s and the early/mid 1990s, In Paris and its suburbs. All these images come from my personal archives and have been sitting in boxes for 25 years.”

As graffiti evolved further, newer generations came up, tools and styles changed the traces of the local originators slowly kept on disappearing through buff, being overpainted or they just faded away.

“The younger ones painted more, faster, bigger, aimed higher, killed their idols – even if it meant erasing the very remains of their existence and their reigns. […] Photography became a weapon to safeguard my memories, but also a final homage to my elders.”

Now some 25 years later it was time to revisit his private Pandora’s box, make a selection and put the highlights in an order as well as adding an index to identify even hard to read examples. The outcome is a 180-paged big format softcover book filled with atmospheric analogue shots of countless signatures which have been found under bridges, in tunnels, on shutters or along the train lines.
