Barry McGee – Reproduction

Barry McGee is a San Francisco based graffiti writer and artist, pioneering the Bay Area Mission School art movement. Starting writing in the late 1980s within two decades he became internationally known for his brilliant handstyle tags as TWIST, his screw logo/moniker, characteristic heads, patterns, letter designs, sign painting and artworks which directly connect to the writing lifestyle.

The 2022 book „Reproduction” is the first ever collection of McGee’s photographs which cover several decades of his career. The 224-paged compilation consists of a broad mix of personal photos showing everyday life sceneries, family portraits, monikers, his friends, surf lifestyle excerpts, paintings, graffiti sections with tags, throw-ups and action shots, but also several street impressions with e.g. a series of eye-catching graffiti removal traces.

The photographs allow to get a closer look on often shown photographic works in his shows and to get a better insight into the artist’s way of perceiving his surroundings and so provide a better way to understand and access his artworks which interact in various levels of alternative cultures.
Reproduction includes texts from Sandy Kim, Ari Marcopoulos, and Sandra S. Phillips which deal with Barry McGee and the printed photographs.
