Adam Kraft – An-Bau

If you are into the topics of exploration of the cityscape and unauthorized appropriation of spaces within the city you most likely came across the works from Adam Kraft or simply ADAM from Stockholm. He is known for outstanding and well thought out interactions in several major European cities in the past two decades. In his 2023 published book “KEY NOTES ON THE UNRULY CITY – Social, Material, and Spatial Transgressions” the first time ever the reader gets an extensive textual and pictorial context to his often long term projects. The book also focuses on his project An-Bau in Berlin, in which he has created a very secluded retreat in the centre of the city. The publication AN-Bau is mentioned for the first time in the book. He created a unique way to share information about this place:
“With the aspiration of the An-Bau to function as a commons of sorts, I wanted to reach people outside my existing community. For this purpose I put together a letter, stuffed in an envelope along with a few printed pictures. I distributed these in randomly chosen residential letterboxes throughout the city. But instead of only distributing it in Berlin, I also delivered these letters in other cities (Paris, Vienna, among others). In the end, about 3000 letters were delivered”
The place has since disappeared, but some of these letters still exist. Adam was so kind and gave us the rest for our customers and interested people. There are different cover versions available, in German and English. We will send them to you at randomly.
