Painting freight trains is a whole different game as common trainwriting. The pieces possibly last for years, they travel on a seemingly random schedule all over the country and even cross borders. A freshly painted Transwaggon in Hamburg from 2004 can easily appear parked next to a nice FUME and BARTO in Bologna in 2011, or even totally worn down but still readable in Kolding in 2024 with 20 years of traces of heavy use on it.
The fact that apparently pieces on freight trains might appear anywhere and at any time all across the continent, totally changed the reception of these works. As a result even the videos non-graffiti related train enthusiasts take of passing freight trains became a source for information. TRAINSPOTTING “STOLEN STUFF” is a brand new publication, that exactly puts these niche in focus.
Passionate freight train writers scan these moving images on social media and video platforms, always seeking for footage of their own pieces, these by friends or simply to get an overview, like browsing through a graffiti magazine. Stumbling across a rare freight by a favourite writer or a not yet documented piece can bring feelings of pure joy to a passionate freight train nerd. “STOLEN STUFF” is a 72-paged compendium of stills from well selected European freight videos featuring some of Europe’s notorious boxcar champs.
