VANDALS IN PARIS

VANDALS IN PARIS is a conceptional photo book by Berlin based photographer Thomas von Wittich and the French journalist Antoine Flandrin. In 2019 they decided to capture the momentary illegal writing and street art scene in the French capital. After requesting around 50 relevant players the Covid pandemic came up and the project’s time frame expanded to the years 2020 and 2021.

Their selection brings together newer generation writers, 80s originated legends, abstract working artists as well as visitors from other countries. What unifies all of them is working without permission in the streets of Paris. Thomas von Wittich joined each participant on day and night missions and captured them in outstanding black and white action shots catching tags, outlining throw-ups or placing paste-ups.

But we really get to know the writers and artists through the in-depth interviews by Antoine Flandrin who managed to prepare well chosen individual questions for each feature. We get to know writers who started less than ten years ago and old timers who do it for decades. Their intentions, experiences and reflective thoughts give an real added value to the 43 portraits of single persons and groups. The preface by FUZI rounds off this 336-paged hardcover to a recent must-have if you are interested in the Paris scene.
