LAST SURVIVORS

Greg Lamarche, within the graffiti scene better known as SP.ONE, is a famous writer from New York City who started out in 1981. In the 1990s he began to publish the well-known SKILLS magazine and managed to keep graffiti in his life to this day whether its his brilliant handstyle, unique throw-ups, high quality pieces or the graff-related artworks he exhibits as fine artist.

LAST SURVIVORS is a brand new publication by him spotlighting earliest New York namewriting traces he found under layers of paper on advertising panels in subway stations around town. A lot of these panels seemingly have never been cleaned but just kept on pasted over with new ads and this way conserved writings with 50 years of age or even older underneath. Between 2015 and 2025 Lamarche systematically visited these hidden treasures and resurfaced unique remains from a long gone era.

“These photos document and anticipate the shift from writing on walls to trains. Crude handstyles were born and developed into more individualized signatures that displayed a unique style which was becoming more evident.”

The late 60s and early 70s writings include well and lesser known names, political and religious messages as well as romantic inscriptions executed with spray can, marker and in some cases seemingly even oil chalk. LAST SURVIVROS opens with an introduction by Greg Lamarche and he even added a detailed index including the exact location which allows to track down the traces of legendary writers like FDT56, FRANK207, JEC*, LA-ZAR, LEE163D, LSD-OM, MICO, SJK171, STAYHIGH149, TABU1, TRACY168 or VINNY.
