Das was wir heute Graffiti nennen, hat seine Ursprünge auf den Nahverkehrszügen des New York der 1970er Jahre. Schon früh fanden sich in und um die Szene der aktiven Sprüher Fotografen, die deren Werke dokumentarisch festhielten. Erst durch die Dokumentation und Publikation in Büchern wie Subway Art konnte Graffiti zu dem weltweiten Phänomen werden. Auch heute folgen viele Fotografen aus der Graffiti-Szene, sogenannte Spotter, noch dem traditionellen Festhalten von Bildern auf Zügen. Das Graffiti steht dabei im Vordergrund und bei komplexer angelegten Aufnahmen an teils exponierten Stellen fernab der Bahnhöfe liegt der Fokus auf dem Abbilden des ganzen Werks. Lesbarkeit, Schärfe und bestmögliche Wiedergabe der Farben bei Tageslicht sind ein Muss.

Emmett E. fotografiert Graffiti seit vielen Jahren. In Farbzüge zeigt er dem Leser und Betrachter Fotos von bemalten Berliner S-Bahnen. Er geht dabei über den bloßen Aspekt der reinen Abbildung weit hinaus. Der Fotograf stellt das Graffiti als Signatur in den Hintergrund und fokussiert den Blick auf das Zusammenspiel der Farbe mit der Umgebung. Diese Herangehensweise ermöglicht es, die Motive an diversen Orten, zu verschiedenen Zeiten und aus einem neuen Blickwinkel zu betrachten.

Auf 144 Seiten zeigt Emmett E. den Kontext, den bemalte Züge in den wenigen Stunden oder Tagen ihrer Existenz durchfahren. Die chronologische Reihenfolge des Buches beginnt mit einer Aufnahme um 6:16 Uhr und endet um 22:48 Uhr. Die Kommunikation mit dem Betrachter der Werke und mit der jeweiligen Umgebung steht hier im Mittelpunkt. Seine Fotos zeigen Farbzüge in Situationen und zu Zeiten und Wetterbedingungen, in denen andere Trainspotter bereits Ihre Kamera in der Tasche verstaut haben und auf dem Heimweg sind. So sind vor allem Aufnahmen entstanden, die mit dem etablierten Stil von Graffiti in Magazinen und Büchern brechen.
