EGS: Concrete Reflections
– – –

Finnish contemporary artist EGS is one of the most successful of his generation, with several solo-exhibitions in major Finnish museums in the past few years. As one of the first clearly graffiti-rooted artists in Scandinavia EGS had a major solo show in Helsinki’s Kunsthalle in 2018. 2020 he was exhibited at The Finnish Glass Museum and in the summer of 2021 he was part of the Helsinki Biennale.

EGS works with both traditional graffiti, abstract paintings and drawings, and glass sculpture. No matter what material or surface, the style is clearly recognizable, EGS roots in the Finnish graffiti styles of the 1990s – a bit New York funk, a bit Scandinvian ugly-naivism and some influences by the heavy architecture of the early 1900s in Helsinki – is visible in all of his work.

This is an offshoot from his successful book Writing Stories with Three Letters, which was published in 2020. In this fanzine EGS continues to show his universe through diverse techniques and materials – glass, paper, spray on concrete – and through a number of styles: graffiti, drawings, sculptures and more. The reader gets to see EGS’ work from around the world.

In two texts, author Mike R. Watson and Dokument Press’ editor Tobias Barenthin Lindblad dig into the meaning of EGS’ art and the environment where he chooses to paint – the ruins of modern society, made of concrete.
